Leigh mum to bake round the clock for Dementia UK fundraiser

Earlier this year, well-known Leyther Alex Wilcock was diagnosed with the early signs of dementia and although he remains in good health, the diagnosis has had a big impact on the family.

Alex spent decades working at Coans Bakery on Chapel Street and his family have been eager to do something to raise awareness of the condition since his diagnosis.

Raising money for Dementia UK, who support people with dementia and their families, Alex's daughter Nicola committed to using her baking skills as part of the charity's national fundraiser.

Raising money for Dementia UK, as part of the charity's 'Time for a Cuppa' fundraiser, Nicola spent the week preparing for an all-day bake-a-thon on Saturday, May 4.

With a passion for baking, the mum-of-two has been baking celebration cakes, cupcakes, and sweet treats alongside her full-time job for the last 13 years.

She had a brief hiatus after moving roles to a cleaning company but got back into the hobby during lockdown - much to the delight of her previous customers.

Nicola said: "My lovely dad was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year, and because of this, the condition has become a big thing for our family.

"I'm keen to raise awareness of the symptoms and support for dementia so after seeing the charity's 'Time for a Cuppa' fundraiser, I thought it was a perfect time to join in.

"I've been preparing my cakes and getting everything ready all week, and then I'll be baking all day and selling from home all day."

To try and raise as much money as possible, Nicola also be raffled off a handful of prizes, including vouchers for various businesses, as well as a signed Leigh Leopards rugby ball.
